Research Reveals the Foods that Can Hinder Vision Deterioration
You are what you eat, and a research team from National Institutes of Eyes is about to proof this notion. Remember those childhood days when your mom kept asking you to finish the carrots?
She said it could improve your eyesight. However, have you ever wondered to yourself and questioned whether carrot can truly make you see well? The olds folds linked carrot with eyesight back to the Word War II event.
They said that the British pilots had a perfect night vision due to the carrot eating routine, although the truth was that they were using radars! Now that we have bust the old myth, an expert, Dr. Emily Chew, seek to introduce a new, scientifically proven belief.

Foods Cannot Reverse Your Bad Eyesight, It Can Only Stop It from Getting Worst
For many years, we heard from our doctors about the benefits of vegetables and fish. However, Dr. Chew stated that despite having numerous long-term studies on the effect of diet to our eyes, there is still no success in proving that such healthy diets can reverse eye damage.
She added that these meals cannot improve your eyesight, but it sure helps in stopping it from getting worse. When it comes to the carrots, she also said that this orange veggie is great for our body, but there is no scientific proof to claim its benefits to the eyes!

Omega-3 Fatty Acid and Other Vitamins that Are Better than the Carrots
One of the National Institutes of Health first experiments was about the Age-Related Eye Disease Study, also known as AREDS. This study monitored 5000 patients for more than ten years.
It concluded that the risk of committing Advanced Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) was reducible (up to 25% within five years) by taking a specific supplement.
This supplement should contain Vitamin C and E, Zinc and Beta-carotene. AMD is a disorder that erodes central vision and is the number one reason for blindness in the America. After studying the dietary habits of the participants, the research revealed that eating the highest amounts of leafy greens can reduce up to 40% risk of having AMD. These leafy greens are kale, collard greens, and spinach. The same reduction is also true for those who eat fish that is high in Omega-3 fatty acid for at least twice a week.
So, why do leafy greens is so good for your eyesight? Well, the study discovered that there are two members of carotenoid family widely present in leafy greens. They are lutein and zeaxanthin. These properties are that main components of the small spot near the retina center and this spot is macula. Macula is the one that handles clear vision.
However, back in the old days, these two components were not commercially available as supplements. Besides than that, omega-3 fatty acid is also present in abundance in our retina. Beta-carotene, which is high in carrots, is not.
New 2006 Research Suggests Leafy Greens Can Reduce Eye Disease Significantly
The NIH initiated a new research in 2006 to study the effects of the three ingredients mentioned above to those who suffered eye disease. They would like to find out whether adding these properties into AREDS supplements would be able to stop vision deterioration.
The result was astounding. They found out 20% decrease in the risk of further eye damage in those who took the AREDS supplements that contained lutein and zeaxanthin compared to the supplements that did not contain any.
The research team also conducted further monitoring on those who did not include leafy greens into their diets. They assigned the new AREDS supplements and old supplements randomly to the participants and found that there was a 26% of risk reduction in those who took the new supplements.
It further proved that lutein and zeaxanthin are efficient preventive properties for eye disease. Interestingly enough, the study also discovered that beta-carotene supplements could increase the risk of lung cancers in current and former smokers.

The Role of Genes
Another eye-related research study that started since 1990 called The Rotterdam Eye Study looked at the relationship between genetics and diet and revealed surprising findings. The research shows that those with bad AMG genes can overcome its genetic influence by adopting a diet that contains high vitamin A, C, E and other antioxidants such as zinc, lutein, and zeaxanthin.
It is also crucial to note that there is no research that has been able to prove the impact of omega-3 supplements to our eyesight. However, if you are to consume a fish – and not a supplement – it does create a significant difference to your vision.
Start Taking Real Foods to Hinder the Deterioration of Your Eyesight
Based on our discussion above, we now know that we cannot fool the Mother Nature. It knows the difference between real foods and supplements, and it prefers real, organic foods!
Therefore, if you are currently suffering an eye disease and would like to stop it from getting worse, take Dr. Chew’s advice into consideration. She recommended us to eat fish at least twice a week and leafy greens several times a week. Just remember, take real foods that are high in vitamins and antioxidants, and not just supplements!
